The territory

The distinguishing features of the Bolgheri DOC production zone

Bolgheri is a remarkably diverse territory, characterised by very diverse soils and huge biodiversity. Only a thorough knowledge of the territory allows the cultivation of healthy, well-adapted vineyards that suffer no stress and are capable of gradual and harmonious ripening.

In most cases the soils of Bolgheri are sandy-clayey, alkaline, deep and characterised by plenty of stone, in which it is sometimes possible to note the presence of fossil fragments, even on the surface, bearing witness to the area’s geological history.

Wind and harmony

Ventilation is a key element in the health of the estate’s vineyards: the whole area is cooled by breezes from the sea, which is just 3 km from the vines and creates an average annual temperature roughly one degree lower than in other coastal areas. This is a condition that conveys great freshness and elegance to the wines.

The frequent presence of wind (at least 250 days a year) limits the presence of humidity in the vineyards and the risks of disease associated with it.

Exposure and quality

The westerly exposure of many of the estate’s vineyards and the proximity of the sea guarantee plenty of light in the afternoon and early evening, limiting excessive direct irradiation of the clusters to the great benefit of the phenolic ripening of the grapes.

The typical conformation of the land and the consequent recirculation of the winds keep the area’s average rainfall relatively low.
